BELGRADE - Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic thanked Thursday Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Laos Thonglun Sisoulith for the country's principled stand on the so-called independence of Kosovo-Metohija, and added that Serbia is committed to resolving this issue through negotiations. It is in our interest to provide better life for all citizens of Kosovo-Metohija, Nikolic said. He told his guest that Serbia expects to get a date for the start of EU accession talks in late June, adding that this would be a good sign for foreign investors, since it will infuse them confidence to invest in the Serbian economy. Sisoulith conveyed Laos' support for the policy pursued by Serbia's state leadership with respect to the issue of Kosovo- Metohija.

He also said that he and Serbian Foreign Minister Ivan Mrkic defined concrete steps for improving bilateral cooperation, primarily in the field of economy, the Serbian president's press office released in a statement. Sisoulith passed the invitation of the Laotian president for Nikolic to come and visit the country. Serbia is currently facing economic crisis, but it has several great chances to make progress. One of them are friendships which former Yugoslavia established across the world. Serbia will maintain these friendships, and will not let them down, Nikolic added.

The Serbian president openly invited the President of Lao People's Democratic Republic to pay a visit to Serbia. On Wednesday, Sisoulith and Mrkic signed agreements on cooperation in culture and education and on abolition of visas for diplomatic and official passports. The two ministers said the signing of the two agreements, as well as the preparation of new ones - on the protection and promotion of investments and avoidance of double taxation - lay the groundwork for strengthening economic cooperation.
