Investigation against Taci's associates

5/7/2013 4:57:00 PM

BELGRADE - Alus Gasi, former Kosovo health minister, and Saip Muja, advisor of the Kosovo prime minister, are among eight suspects in a new investigation into illegal human organ trafficking conducted by EULEX.

They are suspected of abusing the political influence and closeness with Kosovo Prime Minister Hasim Taci to cover up 30 illegal kidney transplants at the Medicus Clinic in 2008.

The organ donors were recruited from poor eastern European and central Asian countries, and promised around EUR 15,000, while the recipients, mainly Israelis, paid up to EUR 100,000 per organ. Late in April, five persons were convicted for illegal organ trafficking at the Medicus Clinic, and the longest sentence of eight years was delivered to urologist Lufti Dervisi.
