Dacic: There has to be order in MUP

BELGRADE – Ivica Dacic, Serbia's prime minister and interior minister, called on the representatives of the Interior Ministry (MUP) to stop giving statements without his approval, making it clear that things cannot go on in this way, as there has to be order in the MUP.

There has to be order in the MUP. It is true that the police are independent within the Interior Ministry (MUP), but as the minister, I am responsible for the work of the entire ministry. Every day,

I can see in the media various statements of police officials and MUP representatives, and this has to stop, Dacic told reporters at the celebrations of the Day of the Military Security Agency on Thursday evening. The prime minister voiced doubt as to whether during the term of Dragan Jocic they had been able to issue such statements.

Dacic said that he has issued an order to the police to investigate whether someone was wiretapping the state officials, and underscored that if it proves to be the case- the perpetrators will be brought to justice, Dacic said.

At the same time, Dacic said that the prosecution is also carrying out an investigation, and stressed that any such abuse of power in security structures is absolutely unacceptable, and that such cases must be punished. Dacic said that he had discussed the wiretapping issue with Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic even before it was made public.

The prime minister underlined that their common stand is that the security sector should be backed in defending the country, and operations related to the security and the fight against crime and corruption, but that any body from that sector must not be above the state.
